In the path to spiritual enlightenment, one of the most powerful tools I learned for building patience and keeping love in my heart is practicing staying in my heart space. Looking out from my heart space assists me in dealing with people who ordinarily tax me. This is a difficult maneuver but extremely important to learn. Once you learn it, it becomes second nature and you may find yourself there without having consciously done a thing!
The best resource that humans have to "try on new clothes" so to speak, is one most adults shun as a trite waste of time. As children we practiced being Moms and Dads while playing house. We pretended we were soldiers and aliens, we feigned relationships that did not exist and we went through marital spats and the trials of owning your own bakery - even if the pies were all mud-based. We learned so much from those experiences and we learned safely. I discovered that if I was too critical of my fake husband, he wouldn't play house with me anymore (divorce). I discovered that if I shoot to kill in war games one of two things happen: either I get shot and killed, or I quickly run out of living kids to play with. Truly, I become an Army of one. So we learn the values of "Capture and Release," "Don't take all of the metallic crayons for yourself - share them," and "I'm really good at this."
Relief swept over me when the creative visualization trend swept over America. That's where you imagine yourself achieving a goal or obtaining a desire you have. The process of taking a few minutes each day to let the idea of achievement wash over you permits you to paint the picture and create the path for it to occur. I have so much more to say on that, but for now, let's stay on topic of getting into your heart space!
Use your imagination to get yourself there. Don't be shy about it, do it with power. Usually the seat of your consciousness resides in your head, somewhere around your third eye chakra/forehead area. This consciousness is how you see and relate to the world around you - it filters what you see and experience. We are going to shift that consciousness to our heart chakra - to the area in the center of your chest where you feel fullest when someone tells you, "I love you."
